Short answer: Screen Studio is a macOS only app, so there is no official Windows version. The best Screen Studio alternatives for Windows are Recordful and OpenScreen (free, open source apps with zoom effects), FocuSee (a paid desktop app), Cap (open source, built around sharing), OBS Studio (free but manual) and Recordly (a Chrome extension that zooms smoothly while you record).
I built Recordful, so it is on this list. I kept the comparison to public facts and said where another tool is the better pick.
Does Screen Studio work on Windows?
No. Screen Studio needs macOS Ventura 13.1 or later. There is no Windows or Linux version.
It also has no free tier. As of October 2026 it costs $29 a month, or about $9 a month when billed yearly ($108 a year). Check screen.studio for the current price.
That gap is why people search for alternatives. Google autocomplete for "screen studio alternative" suggests "for windows," "free," "open source," "for linux," "chrome extension" and "cheaper alternative."
What to look for in a Screen Studio alternative on Windows

1. Recordful: best for no-install recording in Chrome
Recordful is a Chrome extension. You record a tab, an application window, your whole desktop or your camera, with microphone and system audio. While you record, you can zoom smoothly into details and draw live annotations: arrows, text, spotlight and click highlights.
Afterward you trim and crop in the editor, then export MP4, GIF or WebM, or save to Google Drive.
Recording is free, and you do not need an account to record and export. Recordful Pro costs $30 a year (about $2.49 a month) or $3.99 on monthly billing. It adds cloud sharing links and extra editor features.
Best for: quick, polished recordings on any computer that runs Chrome.
Watch out: it lives inside Chrome. If you want a native desktop app, look at Recordly or FocuSee.
2. Recordly: best free app that copies Screen Studio's style
Recordly is free and open source, and it runs on Windows, macOS and Linux. It adds auto zoom and smooth cursor animations, timeline trimming, speed changes and frame styling such as wallpapers, gradients, rounded corners and shadows. It exports MP4 and GIF.
Best for: people who want the Screen Studio look without paying for it.
Watch out: open source projects change fast, so read the latest release notes before you rely on a feature.
3. OpenScreen: best simple open source option
OpenScreen is free and MIT licensed. It offers automatic and manual zoom, custom backgrounds, motion blur, annotations and speed control, and commercial use is allowed. It works on Windows directly. On macOS it needs version 13 or later, and on Linux it needs PipeWire.
The project describes itself as a simpler tool, not a one to one clone of Screen Studio.
Best for: quick demo videos with a clean look.
Watch out: expect fewer advanced features than Screen Studio.
4. FocuSee: best paid native app for Windows
FocuSee runs on Windows and Mac and offers auto zoom and cursor tracking. Reviews report a lifetime license option on top of subscriptions, which is rare in this category. Check its site for the current price.
Best for: people who want a native Windows app and are happy to pay for it.
5. Cap: best for sharing links
Cap is an open source, cross platform recorder with instant sharing, no signup and self hosting options. It is closer to a Loom replacement than a Screen Studio replacement, because it focuses on recording and sharing instead of cinematic polish.
Best for: quick walkthroughs you want to send as a link.
6. OBS Studio: best if you are happy to edit yourself
OBS Studio is free, open source and has no recording limits. It does not add zoom effects on its own, so you add them later in a video editor.
Best for: streaming, multi source layouts and full control.
Watch out: the setup takes longer, and the result is raw footage.
Which Screen Studio alternative should you pick?
- Want zero install and a Chrome workflow: Recordful.

- Want to own the app and pay once: FocuSee, if the lifetime plan is still offered.
